Yes, Inconel can be CNC machined, and nickel alloys such as Inconel 625 and 718 are turned and milled into valves, fittings, fasteners, shafts, and high-temperature components every day. Inconel work-hardens, holds its strength at cutting temperatures, and is abrasive to tooling, so it requires rigid machines, consistent feeds, and slower surface speeds than steel.
Buyers asking whether a shop can machine Inconel usually need to know two things: whether the shop has done it, and whether the price reflects what the material demands. Wexmar machines Inconel, Monel, and Hastelloy on our CNC lathes, horizontal machining centers, and Swiss machines in Canastota, New York.
Can you machine Inconel? What makes it difficult
- Work hardening. If a tool rubs instead of cutting, the surface hardens and the next pass becomes harder. Feeds must stay consistent and dwelling must be avoided.
- Heat resistance. The same property that makes Inconel useful at high temperature keeps it strong at the cutting edge, which shortens tool life.
- Abrasive carbides. Hard particles in the alloy wear the cutting edge quickly.
- Burr formation. Tough, ductile material forms burrs that need controlled deburring.
The practical response is rigid fixturing, sharp coated carbide tooling, conservative surface speeds, positive chip loads, and planned tool changes. Rigid machines make a measurable difference. Horizontal machining centers and heavy lathes handle the cutting forces more reliably than light-duty equipment.
Nickel alloys we machine
| Alloy | Typical uses | Machining notes |
|---|---|---|
| Inconel 625 | Marine, chemical process, exhaust components | Solid-solution strengthened, gummy, work-hardens |
| Inconel 718 | Aerospace, energy, fasteners, shafts | Precipitation-hardening, harder to cut in the aged condition |
| Inconel X-750 | Springs, high-temperature hardware | Similar approach to 718 |
| Monel 400 / K-500 | Marine hardware, pump shafts, valve parts | Tough and gummy, K-500 is age-hardenable |
| Hastelloy C-276 | Chemical process, corrosive service | Work-hardens readily, very tough |
We also machine Nitronic 50 and PH stainless grades, which share some of the same challenges. See the full list on our materials page.
Heat treat condition and sequencing
Precipitation-hardening alloys like 718 are often supplied solution-annealed and aged after rough or finish machining. Machining in the annealed condition is easier, but the aging step can cause small dimensional changes. The drawing and purchase order should state the required final condition and whether critical features are finished before or after age. Heat treating is performed through qualified outside processors, and Wexmar manages the routing and final inspection.
How Wexmar machines Inconel
Turned Inconel parts run on our Mazak and Doosan CNC lathes, where live tooling and Y-axis let us add flats, cross holes, and slots without moving the part. Prismatic parts such as valve bodies and manifold blocks run on our horizontal machining centers for 3- and 4-axis milling. Small-diameter nickel alloy parts up to 32 mm run on our Maier Swiss machines. Finished parts are inspected on Brown and Sharpe CMMs under an ISO 9001:2015-aligned quality system, with material certs and heat-lot traceability available.
Why machine rigidity matters for nickel alloys
Cutting forces in Inconel are high, and any vibration at the tool causes rubbing, which work-hardens the surface and accelerates wear. A rigid spindle, a short tool stick-out, and a solid fixture reduce that risk. Our horizontal machining centers are heavy cast machines with pallet-mounted fixtures, and the horizontal spindle clears chips from the cut so they are not recut. On the lathe side, parts are held close to the chuck where possible and supported by a tailstock on longer shafts. These are ordinary shop practices, but they separate a predictable Inconel job from one that scraps parts and runs late. Buyers should expect the shop to discuss tool life and cycle time openly in the quote.
What drives Inconel machining cost
- Material price and availability, which can add weeks for some sizes
- Cycle times several times longer than for carbon steel
- Tooling consumption
- Heat treat sequencing and outside processing
- Certification, traceability, and inspection requirements
Checklist for an Inconel RFQ
- Alloy and specification, for example Inconel 718 per the applicable AMS spec
- Supplied condition and final condition
- Whether critical features are finished before or after aging
- Material cert and traceability requirements
- Quantity and need date, allowing for material lead time
Common end uses are listed on our industries page.
