Build to Print CNC Machining

Wexmar is a build to print machine shop. You own the design. We make the part exactly to your print, at the quantity and cadence you need, with inspection records that prove conformance. Wexmar is a production house, not a design house, which is the distinction that matters when you are handing a controlled drawing to a supplier and expect the part back as drawn.

Build to print vs build to spec

These two phrases get used loosely, so here is how we treat them. Build to print manufacturing means you provide a complete, dimensioned drawing or model and we manufacture to that exact geometry. Every feature, tolerance, finish, and note is your responsibility, and our job is to reproduce it faithfully and document that we did. Build to spec means you provide performance requirements and expect the supplier to engineer a solution that meets them. Wexmar works build to print. We do not redesign your part or substitute a concept of our own. If a print has a conflict or an unclear callout, we raise it through an RFI and wait for your direction rather than guessing. That protects your design intent and keeps accountability where it belongs.

What a complete print package includes

A clean handoff makes for a clean first article. A complete make to print package generally includes the following.

ItemWhy it matters
Dimensioned drawing or annotated 3D modelDefines geometry, tolerances, and GD&T
Revision level and change notesTells us which configuration is authoritative
Material specification and gradeDrives sourcing and material certs
Finish and coating calloutsSets outside processing and masking
Inspection or FAI requirementDefines what evidence we return with the parts
Quantity and delivery scheduleDrives fixturing and production planning

Where you have a full technical data package, a TDP, we work from it directly. A native model plus a dimensioned drawing is ideal, but a fully dimensioned 2D print is enough to quote and build. See our materials list for the grades we machine.

Revision control

Drawings change, and an uncontrolled revision is how the wrong part gets made at volume. Every part we run is tied to a specific drawing revision. When you release an engineering change, we update the controlled program and setup documentation to the new revision, re-verify affected characteristics, and, where the change is significant, re-accomplish first article as required. We machine the revision on your purchase order, not whatever drawing happened to be in the folder last time. That discipline keeps make to print machined parts matching the configuration you actually released.

Reading GD&T and the first article

Our team reads geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and machines to datums, position, profile, and the rest of the feature control frames as drawn. We do not reinterpret a datum scheme to make a setup easier. Before a production lot runs, we perform first article inspection so both sides confirm the part matches the print in every dimension. We can deliver AS9102-style first article documentation, ballooned drawings, and CMM inspection reports from our two Brown & Sharpe CMMs. That first article is your proof that the build-to-print process is set correctly before quantity flows. Our inspection and quality program carries the detail.

Materials, quantities, and compliance

We build to print in carbon and alloy steels, stainless including 303, 304, 316, and 17-4 PH, Nitronic 50 and high-nickel alloys including Inconel, aluminum, brass, bronze, titanium, and engineered plastics. Quantities run from a single prototype through long production. Our quality system is ISO 9001 aligned, not certified. We maintain NIST SP 800-171 with 110 of 110 in SPRS, source DFARS-relevant material, and machine Made in USA, which matters when your print carries defense or aerospace flowdowns. Material certifications and traceability are available on request.

Send the print

  • You keep the design authority. We reproduce the drawing exactly.
  • Revision-controlled programs and documentation on every part.
  • First article and CMM records prove the part before the lot runs.
  • RFIs on any print conflict instead of a silent guess.

Upload a drawing for an instant quote, or send a full package through request a quote and we will return a build-to-print proposal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between build to print and build to spec?

Build to print means you provide a complete dimensioned drawing and we manufacture to that exact geometry. Build to spec means you provide performance requirements and expect the supplier to engineer a solution. Wexmar works build to print and does not redesign your part.

What do you need in a print package to quote?

A fully dimensioned 2D drawing is enough to quote and build. Ideal is a native 3D model plus a dimensioned drawing, the revision level, material spec, finish callouts, any FAI requirement, and the quantity and schedule. A full TDP works directly.

How do you handle a drawing revision change?

Every part is tied to a specific drawing revision. When you release a change, we update the controlled program and setup documentation, re-verify affected characteristics, and re-accomplish first article where the change requires it. We machine the revision on your purchase order.

Can you provide first article inspection with build to print parts?

Yes. We perform first article inspection before a production lot runs and can deliver AS9102-style documentation, ballooned drawings, and CMM inspection reports from our two Brown & Sharpe CMMs.

Do you read GD&T?

Yes. We machine to datums, position, profile, and the feature control frames exactly as drawn, and we do not reinterpret a datum scheme to simplify a setup. Any print conflict is raised through an RFI for your direction.
