Equipment and capacity
The shop's machines should match your parts. Turned parts need CNC lathes, and turned parts with milled features benefit from live tooling and Y-axis. Prismatic parts need machining centers, and small precision turned parts suit Swiss-type machines. Ask whether the shop runs a second shift and how it handles schedule changes.
Quality system and inspection
Ask which standard the quality system is built on and whether it is registered or aligned. Ask what measuring equipment is used and how it is calibrated. A shop with CMMs and a calibration program traceable to NIST can produce objective dimensional data.
Government and compliance data
For federal or defense work, confirm SAM.gov registration, the CAGE code, relevant NAICS codes, and whether the shop can invoice through WAWF in PIEE. Confirm Buy American and DFARS specialty metals sourcing if your contract flows them down.
Comparing machining quotes
A low price that excludes certs, inspection, or outside processing is not the same scope as a higher price that includes them. Line up quotes by the following items before comparing totals:
- Unit price at each quantity break, and any separate setup or tooling charge.
- Whether material certs, CoC, and inspection reports are included.
- Whether heat treat, plating, or passivation is included and to what specification.
