Wexmar provides CMM inspection services for the parts we machine, using two Brown & Sharpe coordinate measuring machines and a Mitsubishi optical comparator. CMM inspection verifies GD&T callouts, hole positions, profiles, and datum relationships that hand gages cannot measure reliably. For engineers and quality managers searching for CMM inspection near me or dimensional inspection services tied to a precision machine shop, our inspection room is on the same floor as our turning, milling, and Swiss departments in Canastota, New York, near Syracuse.
What CMM inspection is
A coordinate measuring machine uses a precision probe to touch points on a part and record their positions in three dimensions. Software fits those points to features such as planes, cylinders, circles, and cones, then builds a datum reference frame that matches the part drawing. From there it reports sizes, positions, profiles, flatness, perpendicularity, concentricity, and other geometric tolerances. Because the same program measures every part the same way, CMM inspection gives repeatable results that can be compared across a lot, a shift, or a year of production.
When a buyer needs CMM inspection
- Drawings with GD&T position, profile, or orientation callouts
- Parts with many holes or features that must relate to common datums
- First article inspection for new parts or revised drawings
- Customer requirements for a dimensional report with each shipment
- Reverse engineering, where a sample part must be measured to create a print
Wexmar inspection equipment
Our inspection room includes a Brown & Sharpe Gage 2000 CMM and a Brown & Sharpe Gage ONE CMM, both calibrated with NIST-traceable standards, plus a Mitsubishi optical comparator for profiles, radii, small features, and thread forms. Hand gages, micrometers, bore gages, height gages, and thread gages are maintained under ISO/IEC 17025-aligned calibration practices. Our CMMs suit the size range of parts produced on our lathes, Swiss machines, and horizontal machining centers. More about our quality system is on the inspection and quality page.
Inspection methods and typical capability
| Method | Typical use | Typical output |
|---|---|---|
| CMM (Gage 2000, Gage ONE) | Position, profile, flatness, orientation, bore locations | Datum-referenced CMM report |
| Optical comparator | Profiles, radii, chamfers, small features, thread form | Measured values, overlay check |
| Hand gages and micrometers | Diameters, lengths, in-process checks | Recorded values on inspection sheet |
| Thread plug and ring gages | Thread class acceptance | Go/no-go result |
| Surface finish check | Ra verification per print | Recorded Ra value |
Our general rule is that the measuring method should be about ten times more precise than the tolerance being checked. For very tight tolerances, we will tell you which method we intend to use before quoting.
What a CMM report includes
A typical Wexmar CMM report lists each characteristic, its nominal value and tolerance, the measured result, and pass or fail status, with part number, revision, lot, and date. Balloons can be keyed to your drawing, and reports can be provided per part, per sample, or per lot as your purchase order requires.
How we build a CMM program
Our inspectors start with the drawing, not the model. Each characteristic is ballooned, the datum reference frame is set up exactly as the feature control frames call for, and the probing strategy is chosen to represent each feature fairly, with enough points on bores and planes to capture form. The program is proven on the first article and then saved with the job so repeat orders are measured the same way, by any inspector, on any shift.
Materials and parts
We inspect parts in all materials we machine, including carbon and alloy steels, stainless, Nitronic 50, Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, titanium, and engineered plastics. Plastic and thin-wall parts need light probe force and temperature stabilization, which we account for.
Quantity fit
CMM inspection supports single prototypes, first articles, and production sampling plans. For production, inspection frequency is set by the customer requirement or by our standard sampling plan, and CMM programs are saved so repeat orders are measured the same way.
Inspection deliverables
Available deliverables include CMM reports, first article inspection reports in AS9102 format, material certifications, heat-lot traceability, and outside processor certifications. Our quality system is ISO 9001:2015-aligned. See also our first article inspection page.
