Wexmar offers CNC milling services built around six Mazak horizontal machining centers with automatic pallet changers. Every milled part we ship is produced on a horizontal spindle using 3-axis and 4-axis strategies, which gives buyers of housings, manifolds, brackets, blocks, and plates a CNC milling machine shop with strong chip evacuation, multi-face access, and production-ready fixturing. If you are looking for CNC milling near me in Central New York, our shop is in Canastota, near Syracuse, and ships nationwide.
What CNC milling is
CNC milling removes material with a rotating cutter while the workpiece is held in a fixture and moved along programmed axes. Milling creates flat faces, pockets, slots, contours, bolt patterns, bores, and threaded holes. On a horizontal machining center the spindle is parallel to the floor, and the part sits on a pallet that can index or rotate, so several sides of a part can be reached in one clamping. Chips fall away from the cut rather than packing into pockets, which helps tool life and surface finish on deep features.
When a buyer needs CNC milling
- Prismatic parts such as housings, valve bodies, manifolds, and gearbox covers
- Brackets, mounting plates, and structural blocks with hole patterns on several faces
- Parts with deep pockets or cavities where chip evacuation affects quality
- Production runs where pallet changers keep the spindle cutting during loading
- Turned blanks that need secondary milled features too large for a live-tool lathe
How we plan a milled part
Before a job is released, our programmer reviews the print datums and decides which faces can be machined together on one pallet. Stock is cut on our KASTO saws, fixtures are built or pulled from the tool room, and the first part is inspected before the run continues. For custom CNC milling with tight feature relationships, planning the setup around the datum scheme usually matters more than spindle speed, and it is where most of the accuracy in a milled part is won or lost.
Wexmar horizontal machining centers
Our milling department runs two Mazak FH4800 horizontals, a Mazak PFH4800, a Mazak Nexus 4000-II, and two Mazak Nexus 5000-II machines. All six have pallet changers, so one part can be loaded while another is being machined. The Nexus 4000-II suits smaller prismatic parts, the FH4800 and PFH4800 cover mid-size production work, and the Nexus 5000-II machines take larger parts and heavier fixtures on their bigger pallets. Details on each machine are listed on our machine list, and the process overview is on our CNC milling page. For multi-face work, see 4-axis machining.
Typical tolerances and finishes
| Feature | Typical standard | Typical tight (by review) |
|---|---|---|
| Linear dimensions | ±0.005 in | ±0.001 in |
| Hole position (true position) | 0.005 in | 0.001 in |
| Bored diameters | ±0.001 in | ±0.0005 in |
| Flatness (per face) | 0.002 in | 0.0005 in, or surface ground |
| Surface finish | 63 Ra | 32 Ra |
| Tapped holes | Class 2B | Class 3B, thread milled |
These values are typical and depend on part size, material, and fixturing. Features tighter than the right-hand column are reviewed by our estimator and programmer before we quote.
Materials for CNC milled parts
We mill aluminum, carbon and alloy steels, 300-series, 400-series, and PH stainless, Nitronic 50, Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, titanium, brass, bronze, copper, and engineered plastics. Aluminum housings and steel manifolds are common; nickel alloys and titanium are programmed with conservative chip loads and rigid fixturing to protect tolerances and tool life.
What about 5-axis?
Wexmar does not operate 5-axis milling machines. Many parts sold as 5-axis work are really multi-face parts that can be produced on a 4-axis horizontal with tombstone fixturing and indexed setups. If your part needs true simultaneous 5-axis contouring, such as an impeller or blended freeform surface, tell us early so we can give you a straight answer.
Quantity fit
CNC milling here fits prototypes, low-volume batches, and production. Pallet changers and tombstone fixtures make repeat production efficient, and second-shift capacity supports scheduled releases. For single prototypes we keep fixturing simple so cost stays reasonable.
Inspection deliverables
Milled parts are verified on Brown & Sharpe Gage 2000 and Gage ONE CMMs for position, profile, and flatness callouts. We provide CMM reports, AS9102-format first article inspection, material certifications, and heat-lot traceability on request, under an ISO 9001:2015-aligned quality system with NIST-traceable CMM calibration.
