Wexmar provides CNC turning services from a precision machine shop in Canastota, New York, just east of Syracuse. Our turning department runs ten CNC lathes with live tooling and Y-axis capability, so shafts, bushings, fittings, flanges, and turned-and-milled components can be finished in fewer setups. Buyers searching for a CNC turning machine shop or CNC turning near me in the Northeast get a direct shop, not a broker, with turning, horizontal milling, Swiss machining, and inspection on one floor.
What CNC turning is
CNC turning rotates the workpiece in a spindle while a stationary cutting tool removes material to form diameters, faces, tapers, grooves, threads, and bores. Because the part spins on one axis, turning holds concentricity and roundness efficiently, which makes it the default process for any part that is mostly round. On a lathe with live tooling, rotating tools in the turret can also drill cross holes, mill flats, cut keyways, and add bolt circles without moving the part to a mill. That combination is why most of the round parts we ship are completed in one or two operations.
When you need CNC turning services
- Shafts, pins, spacers, sleeves, and bushings where diameters and concentricity drive function
- Hydraulic and pneumatic fittings, valve components, and adapters with turned features
- Flanges, hubs, and pulleys for pumps and power transmission equipment
- Threaded components for fasteners, instrumentation, and electrical connectors
- Parts that need both turned and milled features, where a single live-tool setup reduces stack-up error
Wexmar lathes used for precision CNC turning
Our turning cell includes two Mazak Nexus QT200 lathes, a Mazak Nexus 250, a Nexus 100-II, a Mazak 200 MS, a Multiplex 6300Y, and a Nexus 450-II, along with two Doosan Lynx 2100A lathes and a Boss 552. The mix covers small, fast-cycle parts on the Nexus 100-II and Lynx machines, general chucker and shaft work on the QT200 and 250 class machines, and larger-diameter, heavier parts on the Nexus 450-II. The Multiplex 6300Y and 200 MS handle parts that benefit from second-spindle work, so the back side of a part can be finished before it leaves the machine. For parts under 32 mm diameter in higher quantities, we often route the job to our Swiss machining department instead. The full equipment list is on our machine list.
Typical tolerances and finishes
| Feature | Typical standard | Typical tight (by review) |
|---|---|---|
| Outside diameter | ±0.001 in | ±0.0005 in |
| Bore / inside diameter | ±0.001 in | ±0.0005 in |
| Lengths and shoulders | ±0.005 in | ±0.001 in |
| Concentricity / runout (TIR) | 0.001 in | 0.0005 in |
| Surface finish | 63 Ra | 32 Ra, finer with grinding |
| Threads | Class 2A / 2B | Class 3A / 3B |
Tolerances tighter than these are reviewed part by part against material, wall thickness, and length-to-diameter ratio. Where a diameter needs a finer size band or finish than turning holds economically, we can add centerless grinding after the lathe operation.
Materials suited to turning
We turn carbon and alloy steels such as 1018, 1045, 4140, and 4340; 300-series, 400-series, and PH stainless including 303, 316, 416, and 17-4 PH; Nitronic 50; high-nickel alloys including Inconel, Monel, and Hastelloy; aluminum; brass, bronze, and copper; titanium; and engineered plastics such as acetal, PEEK, and nylon. When a drawing calls for DFARS-compliant specialty metals, we source material to that requirement and keep the mill certifications with the job record.
Quantity fit
CNC turning at Wexmar fits prototype quantities of one to a few pieces, low-volume runs in the dozens to hundreds, and repeat production in the thousands. Second-shift capacity lets us keep a production release moving while prototypes run on another machine. Blanket orders with scheduled releases are common for OEM buyers who want stable pricing and predictable lead times across a year.
Inspection deliverables
Turned parts are checked in process with calibrated micrometers, bore gages, and thread gages, then verified on our Brown & Sharpe Gage 2000 and Gage ONE coordinate measuring machines or the Mitsubishi optical comparator when the print requires it. Available deliverables include first article inspection reports in AS9102 format, CMM reports, material certifications, and heat-lot traceability. Our quality system is ISO 9001:2015-aligned, gage calibration follows ISO/IEC 17025-aligned practices, and CMM calibration is NIST-traceable.
Getting a quote
Send a PDF drawing and a STEP model with material, quantity, and finish requirements. You can upload a drawing for an instant estimate, and a human estimator reviews and confirms every quote before it is released. For questions about a turned part, call (315) 400-2654 or email ron@backwell.com, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern. We ship nationwide by LTL and parcel from Canastota, NY.
