Low-Volume CNC Machining Services

Wexmar provides low-volume CNC machining services for short production runs that are too large for a prototype approach and too small for dedicated high-volume tooling. We machine batches of turned, Swiss, and milled parts on production equipment, with documented setups and inspection, so each lot matches the last. Buyers searching for short run machining near me or a small batch CNC machining source in the Northeast can work directly with our shop in Canastota, New York, near Syracuse.

What low-volume machining is

Low-volume machining covers orders that typically range from about 25 to 1,000 pieces, often repeated a few times a year. At these quantities, setup cost matters as much as cycle time. The job is to set up quickly and correctly, run the lot efficiently, and store the program, fixture, and inspection plan so the next order starts where the last one ended. Low-volume work is common for industrial equipment, spare parts, instrumentation, medical hardware, and defense programs with modest annual requirements.

When a buyer needs low-volume machining

  • Industrial OEM parts with annual usage in the hundreds
  • Bridge production between prototypes and full production
  • Service and spare parts for equipment already in the field
  • Defense and government build-to-print orders with modest quantities
  • Product lines with many part numbers and small quantities of each

Wexmar machines for short runs

Low-volume work runs across our whole floor. Turned parts go to our Mazak Nexus QT200, Nexus 250, Nexus 100-II, 200 MS, Multiplex 6300Y, and Nexus 450-II lathes, our Doosan Lynx 2100A lathes, or the Boss 552, all with live tooling and Y-axis. Small parts to 32 mm run on four Maier MLK-32 Swiss machines with FMB bar feeders. Prismatic parts run on six Mazak horizontal machining centers with pallet changers, where a fixture can stay on a pallet between lots and speed up the next setup. See our machine list.

How we keep short runs economical

  • Programs, tool lists, and setup sheets are saved with each part number for repeat orders
  • Pallet fixtures on the horizontals can be reused lot after lot
  • Live tooling completes more parts in one setup, removing secondary operations
  • Stock is cut on our KASTO saws, avoiding outside material processing delays
  • Blanket orders with scheduled releases spread setup cost across the year

Short run machining also benefits from being close to the people who design the parts. Because a human estimator reviews every quote, questions about tolerances, material substitutions, or lot sizes are answered before the order is placed rather than discovered at the machine. For small batch CNC machining with many part numbers, that early review often saves more than any change in cycle time.

Materials

Low-volume runs are machined in carbon and alloy steels, 300-series, 400-series, and PH stainless, Nitronic 50, Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, titanium, and engineered plastics. For small lots of expensive alloys, we quote material by the piece or bar to avoid charging for more stock than the lot needs. DFARS-compliant specialty metals are available when required. See our materials page.

Finishing and outside processes

Heat treat, plating, anodizing, passivation, black oxide, and powder coat are handled through qualified outside processors that Wexmar manages, so you receive finished parts under one purchase order. See outside processing management.

Quantity fit

Low-volume machining at Wexmar typically covers lots of about 25 to 1,000 pieces. Smaller orders are handled as prototypes, and larger annual volumes move toward our high-volume production approach with dedicated fixtures and Swiss lights-out running.

Inspection deliverables

Every lot is inspected at first piece and at intervals through the run, with final inspection before shipment. Available deliverables include CMM reports from our Brown & Sharpe CMMs, AS9102-format first articles, material certifications, and heat-lot traceability, under an ISO 9001:2015-aligned quality system.

Getting a quote

Send your drawing with lot size and expected annual usage so we can price setup and releases correctly. You can upload a drawing for an instant estimate, and a human estimator confirms every quote. Call (315) 400-2654 or email ron@backwell.com, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern.

Frequently asked questions

What quantity counts as low-volume machining?

At Wexmar, low-volume typically means lots of about 25 to 1,000 pieces, often repeated through the year.

How do you keep setup costs down on short runs?

We save programs, tool lists, setup sheets, and pallet fixtures for each part number, so repeat orders start quickly and consistently.

Can I place a blanket order for low-volume parts?

Yes. Blanket orders with scheduled releases spread setup cost across the year and lock in pricing.
