PPAP Documentation Support for Machined Parts

Wexmar provides PPAP documentation support for customers who need production part approval records with their machined parts. We prepare the part submission warrant, dimensional results, ballooned drawings, and material certifications that make up the core of most submissions, backed by CMM data from our inspection room. Buyers looking for a PPAP machine shop or PPAP support near me can have parts machined and documented at our Canastota, New York shop near Syracuse. To be clear, this is documentation support; Wexmar does not hold IATF 16949 registration and does not claim automotive quality system status.

What PPAP is

The Production Part Approval Process, or PPAP, is a structured way for a supplier to show that its production process can consistently make parts that meet every customer requirement. It came from the automotive industry, but industrial OEMs, fluid power manufacturers, and other buyers now request PPAP-style submissions for new parts and changes. A submission is organized into standard elements and a submission level that tells the supplier which elements to send and which to keep on file.

When a buyer requests PPAP documentation

  • A new part number going into production
  • An engineering change to an existing part
  • A change in material source, outside processor, or manufacturing location
  • A customer quality requirement for documented approval before production shipments
  • Industrial OEM programs that use PPAP elements for supplier approval

How PPAP relates to first article inspection

Dimensional results in a PPAP submission and an AS9102-format first article share much of the same work: a ballooned drawing, measurement of every characteristic, and traceable material records. If your organization uses one format and your aerospace or defense customers use another, we can prepare both from the same inspection. See our first article inspection page.

Machines and process behind the parts

PPAP parts are produced on the same equipment that runs production: ten Mazak and Doosan CNC lathes with live tooling and Y-axis, four Maier MLK-32 Swiss machines with FMB bar feeders for parts to 32 mm diameter, and six Mazak horizontal machining centers with pallet changers. Keeping the approved process on the approved machines is part of what the submission represents, so we document the routing and do not move approved parts to different equipment without notifying you. See our machine list.

Typical tolerances measured

Dimensional results report whatever the drawing specifies. Typical Wexmar capability is about ±0.001 inch on turned diameters, ±0.0005 inch on Swiss diameters, and 0.001 to 0.005 inch true position on milled features, with tighter values by review. Measurements are taken on Brown & Sharpe Gage 2000 and Gage ONE CMMs, the Mitsubishi optical comparator, and calibrated gages.

Materials

We produce PPAP parts in carbon and alloy steels, stainless, Nitronic 50, Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, titanium, and engineered plastics, with mill certifications for every heat.

Quantity fit

PPAP typically accompanies parts headed for ongoing production, from hundreds to many thousands per year. Sample quantities are produced from the production process at the rate and setup that production will use.

Keeping approved parts approved

After a submission is accepted, the approved process is frozen on our side. Material sources, outside processors, machines, and routings stay as documented, and any proposed change is raised with your quality team before it happens rather than after. That discipline is the practical value of production part approval documentation, and it is how we treat every approved part number.

Quality system

Wexmar's quality system is ISO 9001:2015-aligned, with ISO/IEC 17025-aligned gage calibration and NIST-traceable CMMs. We do not claim ISO or IATF registration. More detail is on our inspection and quality page.

List the PPAP submission level and required elements in your request. You can upload a drawing for an instant estimate, and a human estimator confirms every quote. Call (315) 400-2654 or email ron@backwell.com, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wexmar an IATF 16949 automotive supplier?

No. Wexmar provides PPAP documentation support such as the PSW, dimensional results, and material certs, but does not hold IATF 16949 registration.

Which PPAP elements can Wexmar supply?

We routinely supply the part submission warrant, ballooned drawing, dimensional results, material certifications, outside processor certs, and sample parts. Other elements are discussed case by case.

Can you provide both PPAP and AS9102 documentation?

Yes. Both draw on the same ballooned drawing and inspection data, so we can prepare either or both from one inspection.
