CNC Machining for Agricultural Equipment

Wexmar provides CNC machining for agricultural equipment manufacturers, implement builders, dealers and large farm operations from our shop in Canastota, New York. As an agricultural machine shop in Central New York farm country, we machine the pins, bushings, shafts, hubs, hydraulic fittings and drive components that tractors, harvesters, balers, sprayers, planters and dairy equipment depend on. Work ranges from single replacement parts for machines in the field to production lots for equipment builders.

What agricultural equipment buyers order from a machine shop

Farm equipment works in dirt, crop residue and weather, so pivot points and drive parts wear out and need replacement. Typical parts include:

  • Pivot pins and bushings for loaders, hitches, booms and implement frames.
  • Shafts and hubs for gearboxes, rotors, reels and conveyors.
  • PTO components such as adapters, collars and shaft ends, with spline cutting through qualified outside processors where required.
  • Hydraulic fittings, adapters and cylinder parts such as glands and pistons.
  • Sprayer and planter components including nozzle bodies, meters and brackets.
  • Dairy and livestock equipment parts in stainless.
  • Spacers, collars and mounting blocks for aftermarket kits.

Materials common to agricultural parts

Carbon and alloy steels dominate. 1018 and 12L14 cover light-duty spacers and fittings, 1045 is common for shafts and pins, and 4140 and 4340 serve high-load pins and hubs, frequently heat treated through qualified outside processors. 8620 is used where a case-hardened wear surface is needed. Stainless 304 and 316 are chosen for sprayer and dairy parts exposed to fertilizers, chemicals and washdown. Bronze serves bushings, and brass is used for nozzles and fittings. Engineered plastics such as UHMW and nylon appear in wear strips and bushings. Our materials page covers each grade.

Tolerances, finishes and documentation

Agricultural drawings are practical, with tight tolerances only where parts fit together. Typical callouts include ±.001 in. on pin diameters and bushing bores, ±.0005 in. on bearing seats, and ±.010 in. on general lengths. Threads follow SAE and NPT standards for hydraulic fittings, with SAE straight-thread O-ring ports common. Heat treat, zinc plating, black oxide and paint are performed through qualified outside processors.

OEM buyers generally require material certs, dimensional results on critical features and a certificate of conformance. CMM reports and first article inspection in AS9102 format are available when requested. Dealers and farm operations usually need correct fit and a quick turnaround more than paperwork, and we quote accordingly.

Quantity patterns: field repair, seasonal spares and OEM production

Agricultural demand follows the season. During planting and harvest, dealers and operators need 1 to 10 replacement parts quickly to get a machine back in the field. Before the season, dealers and parts distributors stock spares in lots of 25 to 250. Implement builders release production lots of a few hundred to several thousand pieces per part number, often on annual blanket orders. We can hold material for repeat OEM parts so releases ship on schedule.

How our floor handles CNC machining for agricultural equipment

Turning pins, shafts and hubs

Ten CNC lathes, from the Doosan Lynx 2100A and Boss 552 through the Mazak Nexus 450-II for larger diameters, turn pins, shafts, hubs and bushings. Live tooling and Y-axis add grease holes, cross holes, keyways and flats in one setup. See our CNC turning page.

Horizontal milling

Six horizontal machining centers with pallet changers run 3- and 4-axis horizontal milling on mounting blocks, brackets, valve bodies and gearbox covers.

Swiss and grinding

Four Maier MLK-32 Swiss machines produce hydraulic fittings, nozzle bodies and small pins to 32 mm diameter. A centerless grinder finishes hardened pins to size.

Frequently asked questions

Does Wexmar make replacement pins and bushings for farm equipment?

Yes. We turn pivot pins and bushings in alloy steel and bronze, with heat treat through qualified outside processors when required.

Can you machine hydraulic fittings for agricultural equipment?

Yes. We machine adapters and fittings with SAE straight-thread O-ring ports and NPT threads on our lathes and Swiss machines.

Do you take small orders during harvest season?

Yes. We quote single replacement parts as well as seasonal spares and OEM production lots.

What steels do you use for high-load pins?

High-load pins are commonly machined from 4140 or 4340 and hardened through qualified outside processors, then ground to size.
