CNC Machining for Construction and Mining Equipment

Wexmar provides CNC machining for construction and mining equipment manufacturers, attachment builders, rebuild shops, dealers and fleet owners from our shop in Canastota, New York. As a heavy equipment machine shop, we turn and mill the pivot pins, bushings, shafts, hubs, hydraulic cylinder parts, adapters and mounting hardware that excavators, loaders, dozers, cranes, crushers, conveyors and drilling equipment wear through. Work ranges from single rebuild parts to production lots for attachment and equipment builders.

What construction and mining buyers order from a machine shop

Heavy equipment runs under high loads in abrasive conditions, so pivot points, drive parts and hydraulics need regular replacement. Typical parts include:

  • Pivot pins and bushings for booms, sticks, buckets, loader arms and linkages.
  • Hydraulic cylinder components such as glands, pistons, rod eyes and end caps.
  • Shafts, hubs and spacers for final drives, conveyors, crushers and winches.
  • Attachment hardware including coupler parts, mounting blocks and adapter plates.
  • Hydraulic fittings and adapters with SAE, JIC and ORFS ends.
  • Conveyor components such as idler shafts, pulley hubs and bearing housings.
  • Drilling and rock tool adapters within the size range of our lathes.

Materials common to heavy equipment parts

Alloy steels do most of the work. 4140 and 4340 are standard for pivot pins, shafts and hubs, often through-hardened, induction hardened or nitrided through qualified outside processors. 8620 is used where a carburized wear surface is needed, and 1045 serves general shafts and spacers. Bushings are machined from bronze, including aluminum bronze and manganese bronze, or from hardened steel. Stainless 316 and 17-4 PH appear on hardware exposed to corrosive mine water. Castings and forgings, whether customer-supplied or sourced through qualified outside processors, can be finish machined on our horizontals. Our materials page has notes by grade.

Tolerances, finishes and documentation

Heavy equipment parts carry tight tolerances on fits and generous tolerances elsewhere. Typical callouts include ±.001 in. on pin diameters after grinding, bushing bores sized for a specific press fit or running clearance, ±.0005 in. on bearing seats, and ±.010 in. on general lengths. Grease passages, cross holes for retaining bolts and grease fitting threads are common features. Heat treat, induction hardening, hard chrome, zinc plating and paint are performed through qualified outside processors, with final grinding in-house where the drawing requires it.

OEM and rebuild buyers usually need material certs, hardness results from the outside heat treater, dimensional inspection on critical features and a certificate of conformance. CMM reports and first article inspection in AS9102 format are available on request. Our quality system is ISO 9001:2015-aligned.

Quantity patterns: rebuilds, fleet spares and OEM production

Rebuild shops and fleet owners often need 1 to 20 pins and bushings to return a machine to service, sometimes oversize to fit worn bores. Dealers and parts distributors stock common pins in lots of 25 to 200. Attachment and equipment builders release production lots of a few hundred to a few thousand pieces per part number. We keep programs on file for repeat parts and can hold material for scheduled releases.

How our floor handles CNC machining for construction and mining

Turning pins, shafts and hubs

Ten CNC lathes, including the Mazak Nexus 450-II for larger diameters and the Nexus 250 and Doosan Lynx 2100A models for mid-size work, turn pins, shafts, hubs and cylinder parts. Live tooling and Y-axis drill grease passages, cross holes and flats in one setup. See our CNC turning page.

Horizontal milling

Six horizontal machining centers with pallet changers run 3- and 4-axis horizontal milling on mounting blocks, coupler parts, bearing housings and castings. Horizontal spindles clear chips well on the heavy stock removal this work often requires.

Grinding and inspection

A centerless grinder finishes hardened pin diameters, a surface grinder finishes wear faces, and two Brown & Sharpe CMMs verify critical features. Related hydraulic work is covered on our hydraulics and fluid power page.

Frequently asked questions

Does Wexmar make pivot pins and bushings for heavy equipment?

Yes. We turn pivot pins in alloy steel and bushings in bronze or steel, with hardening through qualified outside processors and grinding in-house.

Can you machine oversize pins for worn bores?

Yes. Pins and bushings can be machined oversize to fit worn equipment when the measured bore sizes are provided.

Do you finish machine castings?

Yes. Castings and forgings, whether customer-supplied or sourced through qualified outside processors, can be finish machined on our horizontal machining centers.

What documentation comes with heavy equipment parts?

Orders typically include material certs, hardness results from the outside heat treater, dimensional inspection and a certificate of conformance.
