What government buyers order from a machine shop
Government machining requirements come from many directions: military depots, civilian agencies, research facilities, public works departments and transit authorities. Typical requirements include:
- Build-to-print replacement parts identified by NSN or drawing number.
- Bushings, pins, shafts, spacers and fittings for vehicles, equipment and facilities.
- Housings, brackets and adapter plates for electronics and instrumentation.
- Test and maintenance fixtures for depots and repair facilities.
- Research hardware for federal laboratories and agency programs.
- Infrastructure components for water, wastewater and transit systems.
Materials, tolerances and documentation
Government drawings call out the same materials industry uses: 4140 and 4340 alloy steels, 303, 316 and 17-4 PH stainless, 6061 and 7075 aluminum, bronze, brass, titanium and nickel alloys. Typical tolerances range from ±.0005 in. on critical fits to ±.005 in. on general features. Military and federal finish specifications, including anodize, chemical conversion coating, black oxide, passivation, plating and heat treat, are performed through qualified outside processors whose certs are filed with the lot.
Documentation available on government orders includes first article inspection in AS9102 format, CMM reports, a certificate of conformance, mill material certs with heat-lot traceability, and country-of-melt records for specialty metals when DFARS clauses apply. Quantity patterns: spares, recurring and one-time buys
Government buys are frequently small. Spares solicitations run 1 to 100 pieces, often with a first article requirement and a delivery schedule measured in weeks. Recurring requirements from a depot or prime may run several hundred pieces per release. One-time buys for research facilities and public works departments may be a single fixture or a short run of replacement parts. We quote each on its own terms and can hold heat lots so follow-on orders match the first article.
How agencies and prime contractors buy from us

Prime contractors and depot suppliers issue subcontracts or purchase orders with flow-down clauses, which we review at quote so documentation, sourcing and inspection requirements are priced in from the start. How our floor handles CNC machining for government procurement
Ten CNC lathes with live tooling and Y-axis, six Mazak horizontal machining centers with pallet changers for 3- and 4-axis horizontal milling, and four Maier MLK-32 Swiss machines for parts to 32 mm diameter share one floor with our grinding and inspection equipment.
