Wexmar provides CNC machining for oil and gas equipment makers, valve and pump OEMs, instrumentation suppliers and service companies from our shop in Canastota, New York. As an oil and gas machine shop, we turn and mill the corrosion-resistant and high-strength parts that go into valves, pumps, compressors, wellhead accessories and measurement systems: stems, seats, bushings, fittings, shafts and adapters. We machine stainless, precipitation-hardening grades, high-nickel alloys and alloy steels, and we keep heat-lot traceability from bar to shipped part.
What oil and gas buyers order from a machine shop
Most oil and gas work at a precision job shop is pressure-containing or flow-control hardware built to the customer's drawing. Typical parts include:
- Valve stems, seats, balls and bonnets for gate, ball, needle and check valves.
- Instrument and pressure fittings, adapters and bleed plugs with tapered or straight threads.
- Pump shafts, sleeves and wear rings for transfer, injection and process pumps.
- Compressor components such as packing cases, spacers and piston rod hardware.
- Adapters, crossovers and small subs within the capacity of our lathes.
- Sensor housings and probe bodies for measurement and monitoring equipment.
- Studs, nuts and specialty fasteners in corrosion-resistant alloys.
Materials common to oil and gas parts
Service conditions drive material selection. Alloy steels such as 4130 and 4140 are used for pressure-containing parts, often heat treated to a hardness range that suits sour service, with heat treat performed through qualified outside processors. 17-4 PH in the H1150 condition, 410 and 316 stainless cover many valve and fitting parts. Nitronic 50 is used for valve stems and pump shafts that need strength and galling resistance. High-nickel alloys, including Inconel 625 and 718, Monel 400 and K-500, and Hastelloy C-276, appear where corrosion, chlorides or temperature rule out steel. Bronze is used for bushings and wear parts. Our materials page has machining notes by alloy.
Tolerances, finishes and documentation
Oil and gas drawings focus on sealing surfaces and threads. Typical callouts include ±.0005 in. on stem and seat diameters, surface finish of 16 to 32 Ra on sealing faces, ±.001 in. on bore diameters, and class 2 or 3 threads or tapered pipe threads gaged to the drawing. Coatings such as hard chrome, nickel plating and phosphate, along with heat treat, are handled through qualified outside processors.
Documentation matters as much as dimensions in this sector. On oil and gas orders we provide:
- Mill material certs (EN 10204 3.1 type where the mill supplies them) with heat numbers traced to each part lot.
- Material sourced to the specification your drawing calls out, including customer requirements such as NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 where specified.
- CMM reports, first article inspection in AS9102 format, and a certificate of conformance.
- Outside processor certs for heat treat and coatings.
Quantity patterns: spares, repair and production
Oil and gas demand is uneven. Repair and service companies order 1 to 20 pieces of a replacement part on short notice. Valve and pump OEMs release production lots of 50 to 2,000 pieces tied to project schedules. Instrumentation suppliers run small parts in higher counts. Our floor supports all three, with second-shift capacity and lights-out capable Swiss machines for small fittings.
How our floor handles CNC machining for oil and gas
Turning
Ten CNC lathes, from the Mazak Nexus 100-II for small parts up to the Nexus 450-II for larger diameters, turn stems, seats, shafts and adapters. Live tooling and Y-axis add wrench flats, cross ports and bolt holes in one setup. See our CNC turning page.
Horizontal milling
Six horizontal machining centers with pallet changers handle 3- and 4-axis horizontal milling on bonnets, blocks and bodies machined from bar or plate.
Swiss, grinding and inspection
Four Maier MLK-32 Swiss machines produce instrument fittings and small stems to 32 mm diameter. Centerless and surface grinding finish sealing diameters and faces, and two Brown & Sharpe CMMs verify critical features.
