Wexmar provides CNC machining of 410 stainless steel, the general-purpose martensitic grade used where moderate corrosion resistance must be combined with hardness and wear resistance. 410 is magnetic, hardenable by heat treatment, and costs less than the precipitation-hardening grades, which makes it a practical choice for valve trim, pump shafts, fasteners and wear parts in mildly corrosive service.
410 stainless machinability
Annealed 410 has an approximate machinability rating of 55 against AISI 1212 steel at 100. It cuts noticeably easier than 304 or 316 because, as a ferritic-martensitic structure, it does not work harden the way austenitic grades do. Chips form and break more predictably, and tool life is longer. When a design will tolerate sulfur additions, 416 is the free-machining cousin, but 410 is preferred where the part will be welded, polished or exposed to more aggressive conditions.
410 is also available prehardened, often in a condition around 22 to 26 HRC or in a tempered condition specified to a valve or pump industry standard. Prehardened bar lets parts be machined complete without a later hardening step, which avoids distortion and shortens lead time. Machinability in that condition drops below the annealed rating, so we price it accordingly and confirm hardness against the mill test report before cutting.
Tolerances and surface finish
In the annealed condition, 410 turned parts typically hold plus or minus 0.001 in., and selected diameters can be held to plus or minus 0.0005 in. Typical finishes are 32 Ra on turned diameters and 63 Ra on milled faces. When parts are hardened after machining, features that must stay precise are usually left with grind stock and finished by centerless and surface grinding in-house. These values are typical and vary with part design.
Machining notes for 410
410 is friendlier than the 300 series, but it has its own habits:
- Distortion from hardening. 410 is air or oil hardened from high temperature, and parts can move. Rough, harden, then finish is the reliable sequence for tight work.
- Hardened material. 410 hardened and tempered to 35 to 45 HRC can be finish turned with hard-turning carbide or CBN at reduced speeds.
- Edge build-up. In the annealed state, 410 can smear onto a dull edge. Sharp positive inserts and adequate coolant concentration prevent it.
- Magnetism. 410 is magnetic, so chips cling to workholding and parts. Good chip evacuation and cleaning before inspection matter.
- Corrosion during processing. 410 can surface rust in humid storage, so parts are kept dry and protected between operations.
Heat treat and finishing options
Hardening and tempering, annealing and stress relief are performed through qualified outside processors. Tempering between roughly 700 and 1050 F is usually avoided because of reduced impact toughness in that range, and we flag drawings that specify it. Hardened 410 parts that will see corrosion should be passivated after final grinding, because scale and heat tint left from hardening lower corrosion resistance. Passivation, electroless nickel and black oxide for stainless are also available through qualified outside processors.
Common 410 parts
- Valve stems, seats and trim components
- Pump shafts and wear sleeves
- Fasteners, bolts and threaded studs
- Cutlery-style blades, scraper tips and wear pads
- Steam and gas turbine hardware built to print
Shafts and studs run on our CNC turning centers, small precision pins and screws on Swiss machines, and bodies or blocks on horizontal machining centers.
Cost index vs 6061 aluminum
| Material | Approx. machinability (1212 = 100) | Cost index vs 6061 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6061-T6 aluminum | ~180 | 1.0 | Baseline |
| 303 stainless | ~78 | 1.8 | Free-machining austenitic |
| 410 stainless (annealed) | ~55 | 2.0 | Hardenable, magnetic |
| 304 stainless | ~45 | 2.2 | Not hardenable |
| 440C stainless (annealed) | ~40 | 3.0 | Higher hardness and wear |
| 4140 annealed | ~66 | 1.6 | Alloy steel, needs coating |
Values shown are typical and illustrative for a comparable part; actual quotes depend on geometry, quantity, tolerances and mill pricing.
Industries using 410
410 stainless machining services at Wexmar support pump and valve OEMs, power transmission builders, fastener suppliers and government customers ordering replacement hardware to print. From our shop in Canastota, Central New York, we ship nationwide by LTL or parcel. For a higher-carbon, harder alternative, see 440C stainless.
