Custom Threaded Component Machining to Class 2 and Class 3

Wexmar provides custom threaded component machining for adapters, studs, threaded rods, fittings, jack screws and any part where the thread is the critical feature. Our Canastota, New York shop produces CNC machined threaded parts on CNC lathes, Swiss-type machines and horizontal machining centers, and we gage threads to the class on your drawing. We are a direct shop, and a human estimator reviews every quote.

What threaded components do and who buys them

Threaded components join, adjust, seal or transmit motion. A thread that is off in pitch diameter or lead may still start by hand but will gall, leak or loosen in service. Typical buyers include:

  • Fluid power and pump OEMs needing threaded adapters, plugs and port fittings
  • Instrumentation makers with fine-pitch adjustment screws and threaded housings
  • Industrial and power transmission OEMs using Acme lead screws and jack screws
  • Defense, government and aerospace hardware programs with build-to-print threaded parts

How our custom threaded component machining works

Single-point threading on CNC lathes

Our Mazak and Doosan lathes single-point cut UN, UNJ, metric, NPT, NPTF, Acme and buttress threads. Single-point threading gives control over pitch diameter and form, and it lets us cut non-standard pitches and multi-start threads. The Mazak Multiplex 6300Y threads both ends of a part in one cycle. See CNC turning.

Swiss machining for small threaded parts

Threaded parts up to 32 mm diameter run on our Maier MLK-32 Swiss-type machines. The guide bushing supports long, slender studs and adjustment screws, so threads stay straight over length. Internal threads are tapped or thread milled, and external threads are single-point cut with the guide bushing close to the cut.

Thread milling on horizontal machining centers

Internal and external threads on prismatic parts, such as ports in manifolds and housings, are thread milled on our Mazak horizontal machining centers. Thread milling produces full threads close to the bottom of blind holes and allows fine adjustment of pitch diameter for class 3 fits.

Typical materials

  • Carbon and alloy steel, including 1018, 12L14, 4140 and 4340
  • 303, 316, 17-4 PH and Nitronic 50 stainless, with anti-galling care on mating threads
  • Brass and bronze for fittings and Acme nuts
  • Inconel, Monel and Hastelloy for high-temperature and corrosive service
  • Aluminum, titanium and engineered plastics

Critical thread features and how we hold them

  • Thread class: checked with go/no-go ring and plug gages, and thread wires where pitch diameter must be measured directly.
  • Thread to datum concentricity: threads are cut in the same chucking as the locating diameter so the thread axis stays true.
  • Thread relief and runout: relief grooves and chamfers are cut to print so mating parts seat against the shoulder.
  • Lead accuracy: on Acme and lead screws, lead is controlled by the lathe and checked over length.
  • Taper threads: NPT and NPTF threads are gaged with L1 plug and ring gages for standoff.

Design notes for threaded parts

A few drawing choices make threaded parts more reliable and less costly. Calling out a thread relief groove rather than a full thread to the shoulder improves gaging and assembly. For stainless-on-stainless threads, specifying different alloys or a Nitronic 50 part on one side reduces galling. Blind tapped holes should leave room below the last full thread for chips or a thread mill. If a thread will be plated, note whether the class applies before or after plating so we can size it correctly.

Secondary operations

Heat treat, plating, black oxide, passivation and dry-film lubricant coatings are completed through qualified outside processors. Thread rolling, where required for fatigue performance, is also arranged through qualified outside processors.

Quantity patterns

We run threaded components from prototype lots of 10 to production releases of thousands. Swiss lights-out capacity and a second shift support repeat blanket orders. Related pages include custom fasteners and inserts.

Inspection

Thread gages, thread wires, Brown and Sharpe CMMs and the Mitsubishi optical comparator verify pitch diameter, form, runout and relief geometry. Our gage calibration program is ISO/IEC 17025-aligned. FAI in AS9102 format, material certs and heat-lot traceability are available.

Frequently asked questions

What thread forms can Wexmar machine?

We machine UN, UNJ, metric, NPT, NPTF, Acme, buttress and non-standard threads, including multi-start threads, by single-point threading and thread milling.

Can you hold class 3A and 3B threads?

Yes, class 3A and 3B are available on request and are verified with go/no-go gages and thread wires where needed.

Do you roll threads?

Thread rolling is arranged through qualified outside processors. In-house, we single-point cut and thread mill threads.

How do you prevent galling on stainless threads?

We control thread finish and fit, and we recommend dissimilar alloys such as Nitronic 50 or anti-galling coatings applied through qualified outside processors.
